🏥 Hospital (Part A)

Usually $0 premium if you worked 10+ years.

Deductible: $1,632 (per benefit period)

Covers: inpatient hospital, skilled nursing, hospice, some home health.

🩺 Medical (Part B)

$174.70/month standard premium (2025).

Deductible: $240 / year

Covers: doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, medical equipment.

📅 When to sign up for Parts A & B

🗓️ Initial Enrollment Period

7-month window: 3 months before 65th birthday, birthday month, 3 months after.

Example: Birthday June 15 → window March 1 – Sept 30

🔄 Special Enrollment

If you're still working & have group health plan, you can delay Part B without penalty. Sign up anytime while employed or during 8-month SEP after employment ends.

⚠️ Important: COBRA and retiree coverage do NOT count as current employment — you may need Part B.

What Original Medicare covers (and what it doesn't)

⏳ Late enrollment penalty

Part B penalty: 10% for each full 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn't. You pay this extra forever.

Part A penalty: up to 10% added to monthly premium for twice the years you delayed.
